how do you put them together

Postby Cpt. Sandy Vagina » Tue Mar 07, 2006 4:37 pm

How do you do it?

Do you make them in photoshop with screenshots? and merge the images with different effects?

I'd like to figure out how to make my own...

any suggestions

Photoshop. I play a lot with layers, layer styles and fill effects. Like Irish's sig is 3 layers total, the background layer with a grid fill effect, an extraction of her toon (from the same image) laid over it (You can also use the masking tool, or just use the lasso tool and delete the area where you don't want the grid, but my aim is so bad on a touchpad I just extracted it) and the third layer of text.

Occasionaly I'll make my own fractals/abstract images (see Jah's sig and Kenak's magelo) but they're much harder to do and take a lot of patience. I love making sigs and magelos because they're small projects.. I never seem to pull though on big ones. My room is a mess of half finished paintings and sketches =P

I'm self taught in photoshop and really far from mastering it, I'm still learning a lot of new things and making most of it up as I go along. If you could tell me about how much you've done in photoshop I could give you some ideas for where to get started. When I have a chance, I'll post the different layers of irish's sig/magelo so you can kind of see how it breaks down.

I'm just learning photoshop myself. I have it on my laptop, but get a little stuck with all the tools... The lasso is no good for me either I wind up leaving little edges of the border around the image and it looks sloppy. Can you tell me more about extracting images, is it done w/the slice tool, that thing confuses the hell out of me.

A little direction goes a long way...

Nah, the extract filter is the easiest way. It takes a little practice to master but it's the fastest/cleanest way.

Here's a tutorial using my av.

1) Open up the image you want to extract from. Go to "layer > duplicate layer" to clone the image. I named mine "kitty!". Then "layer > new layer" and add a 3rd layer using the default settings.

2) Go to "window > layers" and make sure you have your layers window open. Grab the transparent layer and slip it between your cloned layer and your background layer. Then click your cloned layer in the window to make sure you have it selected - the name of the layer will be bolded when it's selected.

Image

3) Go to "filter > extract". This opens up the extraction filter. On the left there's a tool bar, here's what each one does from top to bottom.

- The highlighter looking thing is (duh) the highliter tool. Clicking it will open up options on your right, right now you should only worry about brush size. Brush size will effect the quality of your extraction. I usualy work with 3px, and lower it to 1px for really fine detail.

- Next is the fill bucket. Once you've highlighted what you want, fill it in with the bucket to select it.

- Eraser tool erases highlights.

- Eyedropper - Frankly I don't know wth this does =P

- Cleanup Tool - Deletes areas you didn't want extracted. Use this to clean up stray marks.

- Edge Touchup Tool - After you preview this will restore parts you erased and did not want to, as well as making ragged edges smooth.

- Magnifying Glass - Zooms in. Alt + click with this tool will zoom out.

- Hand - Moves the image around. Can also be accessed by just clicking the space bar, I highly recommend this.

4) Highlight around the area you want. The filter will pick pixels inside what you enclose. For fine areas like fur/whiskers/ragged edges, click smart highlighting and highlight over them. Fill it in and click preview.

5) This is the preview screen

This is where you use the cleanup and touchup tools to clean the edges of the images. When you have something you're happy with, click done.

6) You'll see this again. Basicaly the same as what you started with but now your copied layer is an extraction.

7) Delete the transparents and background layers. Voila. His whiskers are still a little blue, but you get the idea.

I used to use the eraser tool to cut out the images, but I've since learned that the pen tool is much faster and much better at making smooth lines :) Here's a couple tutorials to show you how to use it.

Basic Pen Tool Tutorial

And at the bottom of this page are some pictures showing how to use the pen tool on a character image. (Also at the top of the thread are some tips on ways to fix up your character image)

The day I even remotely consider making a chanel that has anything to do with you is the day I gouge an eye out and devote my life to drawing furry porn.

I'll be in game for screenshots tomorrow, between school shit and injury I haven't been able to log in.
