As a Ranger, we have an innate AA that we gain 1 rank in per level as we climb the ladder toward 80. Its called Quick Death. At level 78, i almost have it maxed, and I have a 12% modifier for the skill that goes with it. Defensive AA's for me make the difference between being swatted by a fly with them, or being steamrolled without.

haha i agree defensives are eventually needed for clerics. i just think healing aa's and scs should be the first :)

When I was levelling up Sella, I always had a problem with pulling aggro in groups, and sometimes it certainly made it hard to stay alive. I never ended up finishing her SCS aa's, but just the first few ranks made a whole world's worth of difference in her survivability when adds came into camp. There were times when I still died, but that had more to do with her being paper thin and unable to take a hit, since her gear was still lacking in several areas. I personally took the route of leveling up my healing aa's mostly, then worked on maxing out Divine Arb, as that aa just rocks. I went from a subpar healer that just barely got by to at least a run-of-the-mill group healer that was fully capable of filling in a needed slot. Well, unless you want to consider healing a 70.5 hard mission back when the mission was actually hard to get through, when she was extremely undergeared and AA'd. hehe.

i still think that defensives aren't all that great for a cleric. If you want your cleric to tank shit then thats cool, defensives will work there, but i box a warrior that tanks for me so i dont need to. A real cleric should focus on healing efficiently to keep mana up and play so that they dont get hit by rampages and shit. Im just repeating myself again here, i shouldve quoted, but i still think a capable cleric that doesnt want to tank doesnt need the defensive AAs. They just need to pay attention.

Being able to survive when you get aggro is HUGE.

I can think of so so many times in groups in multipull/respawn/tank death situations where I would have died had I not been able to survive a mob on me while being able to keep up healing everyone else who needed it. I can also think of more than a few times on TF raids where we would have wiped or at least a large number of additional people if I had not been able to survive brief aggro.

Typically, if I die or my group wipes, it's not because I'm oom, it's because my HP has fallen to 0.

I think it's more of a matter of how many aa's one has invested in the cleric. If you are low on aa's, and don't have any healing aa's or defensive aa's, well, you are a rather useless cleric nowadays. It's quite blunt to say, but it's a fact of the game. Once you begin to acquire a fair amount of healing aa's to become an effective healer, then I can see Antok's point about survivability. Until one reaches the point of being an effective healer, I can't see the argument of defensive aa's being more important than healing aa's. An uneffective healer that can live, but hit no mana too quickly is nearly as useless as a cleric with max healing aa's and nearly fm, but dies quickly by not being able to take a hit, with resurrection being the only difference between the two.

Divine arb, radiant cure, defensive, shield block, channeling, heal potency, crit heals, subtlety. I did in that order. With tank HPs now, crit heals might be better suited to go before potency.

I am of the camp that staying alive > an extra 3-5 heals during a fight. Mob spawns during event, zergs the first person it sees (you), hits you a few times. You should be able to take hits well enough to at least get off your div arb / epic click to keep the fight going. Clerics sometimes have to take ramp hits because they're often healing before a mob is even being tanked (i.e. ramp tank tags mob, pulls to a corner, main tank pulls from ramp tank. Healing occurring during all of this).

All that being said, I'm still finishing up the SoD defensive AAs. After two years, maxing defensive has become a much larger pain. I don't think I've touched any of the other cleric AAs aside from crit heals.
