More than 620 horses

The supercharged 6.2-liter V8 will produce more than 620 horsepower when it goes on sale in the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 this summer. It is the most powerful production engine in General Motors' history, and should get 28-30 m.p.g. in highway driving.

Supercharger

The sixth-generation supercharger from Eaton Corp. uses a brand-new design that has four lobes to compress air and boost engine output. Previous superchargers had just three lobes that twisted just 60 degrees. The extra lobe and the new blower's 160-degree twist help it to compress air more efficiently, reducing fuel consumption.

Piston

Oil jets spray the forged aluminum pistons to keep them cool in the super-hot high-pressure combustion chamber. The LS9 is the first of GM's small-block V8s whose output is high enough to require oil jets, but the company uses the system in other high-performance engines.

Cylinder head

The cylinder heads use a special aluminum alloy to handle the extreme heat of a supercharged engine. The intake ports feature small bumps to increase the motion of the air and mix it more thoroughly with the fuel for more efficient combustion.

Transmission

The ZR1 gets the latest version of the Tremec six-speed manual transmission that has been a Corvette mainstay for years. Performance-oriented gear ratios help the car reach 60 m.p.h. in first gear, while a new twin-disc clutch was developed to provide light pedal effort and smooth gear engagement

Goofy my respect level has gone down for you since you admitted you don't like peddle shifting, and prefer the lame ass paddles on the damn steering wheel.. Which btw don't really work in most cars the damn thing shifts anyway... I love Maneul cars it gives the full sense of fun in driving. Even better is when you drive a big rig and have to haul something... Downshift down the mountain fool or you'll never be able to control it... weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :angel

Unfortunately in the US manual shifting is nearly as dead as 2 door cars.

I have been lucky, in 20+ years of driving I have only had one automatic, and never owned a 4 door. I did own many a 4 banger in my younger years though.

If you can do the speed limit in first gear, what are the other 5 gears for?
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to take that ZR1 around a track, but how often would you ever actually use all that power?

You guys can keep your 'vettes and 'stangs....
I'll take a 1979 CJ7 any day.

And yeah.... Paddle shifters are for E-tard ravers and spoiled rich kids. If it doesn't have a shifter I can put a chrome skull on, it might as well be a minivan.

I took a Jeep in the mountain trails near Silverton Colorado (4 corners area) it was fun, but it was not something I would want to do all the time.

99.999% of my driving is on paved roads, so a Jeep would be useless for me. Plus they sit too high and are dogs on the road. I have always been a car person, SUV/Minivans/Pickups are fine for hauling stuff like kids, lumber, etc, but I don't care for their looks and bulkiness.

My Z28 only has 300+ hp, but trust me you use that power more often when you have it. I notice the difference when driving my G6 with only 255 hp (and way less torque) and especially driving the wife's minivan.

Accelerating into busy traffic is much easier than if you had some Toyota or Ford Escort 4 banger.

Stuck behind some SUV/Pickup going 40? No problem passing those 2+ ton land barges.

Plus, nothing beats the sound of a V8.

This Corvette is just Chevrolet one upping Porsche, Ferrari, and other sports car makers. This car should run with the best from any production sports car manufacturer at any price.

Well... Apparently a V12 beats the sound of a V8.

But V8 is good enough for me too.

Um... if it's busy traffic you're not gonna get very far... gratz you just saved 1.1 seconds.

I agree with ya there V8's have a great sound. Yeah Serano they have a V12 and also a V10 .. more cylinders doesn't actually mean a better sound, but its a different sound for sure.. guess that's all personal preference. V8's with the right exhaust system just sound totally awesome :)

I know one thing that definitely doesn't beat the sound of a V8: a souped up Camry, Lancer, or any other Fast and the Furious type of cars. The high-pitched whine those engines make when revved up drive me nuts. Some of them do look pretty cool, but I couldn't ever own one of them. I'll take a 'Cuda instead. :thumbup

I agree.....those engines always remind me of a beerfart ...or a weedwacker. Back in my day no one dressed up a 4 door!!!!

I never got the whole lets soup up a four cylinder front wheel drive car craze. For alot less $$$ a Mustang or Camaro can be had with a real engine (there is no replacement for displacement), that would respond just as well, if not better, to any performance increase.

The original Viper V10 (the one with the lame looking side pipes) sounded like a UPS truck. The current Mustang definitely has the "right" sound.

Dodge is already taking orders for the new Challenger, but the asking price has been very steep (40k ish, well over sticker price). At 40k, you might as well just step up to a Vette. The new Camaro is due out next year (or maybe late this year), I expect to start seeing them around where I work (I work near the GM proving grounds) I am pretty sure I have seen a few with heavy cladding on them already, but read that GM will be testing them w/o disguises on now.

With the new CAFE bullshit, I would expect to see 4 cylinder Mustangs and Camaros return as the base model, rather than a V6 as the base model.

Aye Mustangs have one of the best sounds.. slap a MagnaFlow cat-back on it or some Flowmaster super 40's, depending how loud you want it. Corvettes are about next best sound IMO... both are awesome.
