copy/pasting my post from the last thread

To expand on what Bill said, the way I see it, the way were raiding you can earn 20 dkp in probably a week if you went to every raid. If the cap was 20-25ish then yeah, mains would have a fighting chance over alts/boxes. The majority of our loot is going for under that, especially in time. So alts/boxes would still be able to scoop up loot cheaply but if a main really wanted/needed something it would be theirs, and they would only need to raid for about a week to beat out on alt on that. Keep in mind that a time bp went for 20 dkp to an alt last time raid. A piece of Quarm loot went to an alt, for 20 dkp. 28 pieces of loot, on one raid, went for under 20 dkp. You really can get prime loot for not that much dkp.
Most of our members are suprisingly reserved and courteous to mains when bidding with alts but frankly I got steamed the few times I've seen an alt get loot right at the 50 dkp cap. Especially when I know that it's an alt/box who basically just sits around and does nothing on raids and is rarely played except for raids. Them getting a prime piece of loot over a main was just dumb, and lowering the cap would prevent that.
On top of that the 50 cap is way too high because not much loot is going that high anymore. Not many people are willing to bid 30/35/40 on stuff, much less 50, so right now the cap doesnt serve much purpose.
edit: ok i sorted through dkp, here's a breakdown of the last week's loots (minus Inktu'ta since it hasnt been posted yet)
Loots total: 48
Loots under 20 dkp: 43
Loots going to alts/boxes: 9
Right now only 11% of all loot is going for 20+ and ~19% of that loot is going to alts/boxes. Lowering the cap would make the numbers more in tune with what loot is currently going for. So no one gets screwed and everyone is happy, and prime loot can be ensured to go to mains first.
