Going to try and keep this updated with information I find out.

I just grinded to Kindly with Ladies in the Light faction. It took 20 x Mash Browniestasks, which includes 400 mob kill faction hits. At kindly I can now purchase spells from Seridyn in the port-in building in Dragonscale. She sells the following spells, all of which are no drop so one person cant faction up and buy them for the rest.

Chromoassault Rk2 Clr
Funnel of Frost Rk2 Wiz
Phantasman Orb Rk2 Nec
Preincarnation Rk2 Dru/Shm
Tangleweave Energy Rk2 Wiz

I'm debating whether or not to grind to ally to see if more is for sale.

Spells do not drop in instances(confirmed 100% by developers)

Well, we had a level 80 monk tome drop in the guardian instance twice. Not a spell, but still...

Guardian doesnt count. It's only an instance in the sense that its the only way you can zone in. Essentially its a private non-instanced zone.

Essentially its a private non-instanced zone.

:help
so if you are in the zone, nobody else can enter?

If another group wants in what then? they gotta wait? or they get into a parallel universe?
:monkey

It's an instance only in the sense that your group gets it alone, and that 3 or more are needed to start it. All mobs respawn there, named can spawn, yet there is no objective for the mission, so it doesn't end until time is up or you drop it. And spells can drop there.

if more than one group can start it at any given time . . .its an instance.

Guild hall is an instance zone

It does not qualify as being an instance in the sense that spells do drop from it, thats what I'm getting at. Pick up a Bloodmoon instance you will NOT get spell drops. Etc

Any zone that only certain people in a group that can zone into it is considered an instance in my book. Trash mobs respawn in Anguish too, yet someone from outside your raid can't join into it. Whatever dev or devs decided this instance is different than every other instance that has ever been made is lacking in reasoning. I'm not saying they should stop spells from dropping in the Guardian instance, but that if they are allowed to drop there, WHY don't other instances get this allowance?

Deg, you are saying I can buy rank 2 spells with faction? I thought rank 2 were dropped? Let me know where the vendors are and who I need to con for faction status. I'd rather work up my faction and buy rank 2 then even bother with rank 1 at all.

Ok, I've been working my Ladies in the Light faction, and what I've found out and from talking to others, the following seems to work.

If a spell was originally purchasable on one of the 5 vendors at launch, its rk.2 is dropped. Every other spell for each class, as far as I know, can be dropped in the rk1 form, and purchased in the rk2 form with good enough faction. I am currently at Amiable Ladies in the Light faction, and while I can open the merchant window, nothing is for sale yet for me. I have heard that Ladies in the Light takes Kindly faction to purchase a spell. The higher level spells require ally faction to purchase from their specific vendors. Therer are 5 factions that I can think of off the top of my head right now that will produce a spell (and possible other rewards or open up further quests). Ladies in the Light, Akanon Strike Force VI, Fangbreakers, Camp Valor, and Bertox.

This is definitely a different way of doing the spells this time around. I'm not sure what to think of it just yet, but on SoE's side, it takes more work to get your spells, thus they force people to put more work into the game, thus drawing the expansion out longer.
