My Computer

Postby Goofydoofy » Sat Jan 01, 2005 3:09 am

My motherboard took a shit. Looks like the IDE and Memory Channels are working at random now. I am going to get a new motherboard/processor/memory ASAP. I probably won't have it back up and running though for about 1.5-2 weeks from tonight. Work, shipping, savings transfers, etc. So, I may miss my first Saturday raid, maybe my second, but I sure hope not. I will do what I can to be back ASAP, but somebody might wanna plan something else just in case.

I may go next day air and take a day off work. Then I'll be back in time for everything. I'll have to wait and see how long it takes to get my money and the order done.

Haha! So I'm NOT the only one who freaks out and spends a buncha money when the computer goes down. That sucks though Goof.

Computer

Postby Goofydoofy » Sat Jan 01, 2005 4:53 pm

I've been running a 700Mhz for a few years. I went out and bought a 200GB hard drive to replace my 20 and 30GB drives. It crashed two days before and I thought nothing of it. Next day, crashed again. I installed the drive and had it all working and it finally gave out totally. I couldn't get it to stay working for more then a few minutes. Locks at BIOS, locks at Windows loading, locks at regular usage. Checked the memory chips and the IDE channels and everything was freaking out on the motherboard.

I've been looking to upgrade for awhile and now I have to. I will order a new motherboard with a 8x AGP slot so I can get full use out of my Radeon 9700 video card. Going from 640mb of PC133 to 1024mb of PC3200 and from 700Mhz to 1.75Ghz.

Grabbing a new motherboard, processor, memory, processor fan and case. I have a really good power supply, video card and audio card.

I'll finally have a decent system. I was thinking about spending 3K for a awesome system but decided 400 is a much better buy for the upgrade.

Once I get some money transfered over from one bank that has my savings to the bank that has my checking, I'll get it all overnighted to me. I'll hopefully have it all set up and running for my epic hit on the 8th, but it not, oh well. I can always do it another time. I'll be back for sure for Grummus on the 15th.

Damn that sucks man, that Zeph's mom has to pay you that is!

haha seriously I hope you get it worked out, I've never been one to offer solid hardware/configuration advice. Hopefully I learn from whatever you fuck up :thumbup

As for the raids, we'll take care of the gang on any night you can't make it. Shit happens. Usually to me hehe.

hmm.... spring is almost here - and I get to build a new computer. but my next endeavour will be interesting. I no longer have ANY spare parts. I used all the spare parts to build my son and daughters computer. Just last night my daughters said - why can't we have 4 computers. such a lucid question from my entropic 4 year old.

So - faced with the prospect of building a comp from the ground up - I wonder if I want to build a budget or a bells and whistles comp. no idea. I have that new transmission to pay for still. Heck I never finished my comp I built for me last year - never set up a SATA RAID - bleh. Never got the remote controls for it to work either. But at least my Brother in law was impressed with the light up capability it has.

SO I don't know. mebe I can find someone dumping a computer for cheap and build it up from there vs starting from scratch. Hell I don't even have an extra monitor anymore.

Serano, what word did you mean when you wrote entropic? Because I seriously doubt you meant this

Ah, Fnord I think maybe this one:

Inevitable and steady deterioration of a system

2. A measure of the disorder or randomness in a closed system.

5. Inevitable and steady deterioration of a system or society.

these two definitions apply to the tence I used. We (my wife and I) often discussed a more appropriate name for our daughter would have been Entropy instead of Elizabeth. The first day of school her teacher would /boggle while doing role. By the second week she wouldn't question the name.

SATA Raid is cake to set up and quite impressive. I have the 6800GT OC in my machine and a Radeon 9600xt in Riann's, both are nice cards. Just make sure you throw at least a Gig of ram (any speed really), p4 2.6+, and one of the 2 vid cards above and you'll be very pleased with ur EQ performance.

As a benchmark, I have a p4 2.66, 1 Gig of ddr 3200, GeForce 6800GT, ATA 133 in a Raid 0, and some gimp sound card on a PoS Soyo Board. I can run around in the baz at full clip at 1600 x 1200 reso with no problems at all. Also full clip and most spell graphics on at raids are no problem.

$100 to overnight $400 worth of stuff. Sigh. I should be back for Zeks if I don't run into any bullshit config problems.
