So it blew up...

Postby Ceruis » Sun Dec 28, 2008 11:18 am

Okay, my Dell XPS 1710 blew up...or more correctly the GPU and / or PCI-E slot it goes into blew up. If I do anything graphics related it I get a blue screen memory parity error message. Since contacting Dell is out unless I want to pay a shitload of money and the warranty conviently expired a month before this happen I'm soliciting all of your's expert opinion. Can a Dell XPS 1710 GPU be replaced? Google is not your friend and the nVidia forum thinks not because it a dell .

Okay, assuming it can't be replaced, what notebook would do the trick to play not only EQ, but other games like C&C 3 or Oblivion? I know what the minimun requirement are for those games but if anyone has any practical knowledge on the different systems that work well for you please let me know. Danke!

Well yes it can be removed and another one installed (see this Dell link for instructions) http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/s ... #wp1006368

It's finding one that will work as a replacement, and assuming your motherboard wasn't damaged. When you say "blew up" I'm thinking you mean just stopped working .. or was there actually a wisp of smoke?

Yes, smoke or no would matter. If the motherboard's been damaged I'd say you're better off getting a new laptop as a new card may not even work, plus there's the potential for more things to start going wrong with it.

No wisp of smoke. I just kept getting blue screens of death with their damn memory parity error message. I tried to find a diagnostic that would narrow down the problem. What I ended up doing was downloading nTune from nvidia. It runs stability test on the CPU, Disk, RAM, GPU, and PCI-E slot. When I did the test with all options clicked it immediately went to the blue screen. When I did them one by one the disk, RAM, and CPU all passed. When the GPU and PCI-E were done they immediately went to the blue screen. The only time I get the blue screen is when graphics are involved so I'm assuming that it is a graphic problem considering streaming video, music, or browsing the internet is okay.

Thanks Worff for the link.

**Owners manual....I feel like an idiot.....don't say it, Cliffy. Thanks again Worff.

No prob dude... I'm just familiar with Dell's site is all.. pretty handy info they have, it's better than owners manual too lol, you can follow their writeup and completely disassemble/reassemble your laptop if you wanted to. Before long you can do it in your sleep, sort of like your Army-issue M16 :P Just read instructions carefully and take your time.
