Update from Texas

Postby Caniza » Tue Nov 11, 2008 7:14 pm

I haven't posted in awhile, but I'd give ya'll an update on what's going on. I'm pretty much settled in Austin now, though I still have some stuff that needs organizing.

Several weeks ago I took a train ride from Maine down to Austin that took 2days. The first part wasn't bad, but when we got near St. Louis we got stuck due to the compressor breaking down and the engine overheating and since this is an electric train, that meant the power and a/c were off in the whole train. =( It took em 4hrs or so to get a tow into St. Louis. I assume they either fixed the compressor or hooked up a new engine since we didn't switch trains there. I wound up getting into the Ft. Worth station at around midnight or so, 5 hrs behind schedule. So they wound up bussing passengers to their destinations, took us another 3hrs to get to Austin.

We spent a few days here in Austin getting a new place and a few other things before heading down to Galveston. Took us over 4hrs to get there via truck. Galveston seemed somewhat better than it was several months ago. The boats on broadway just before the causeway are still there. I didn't see much in the way of debris, except for the mountain of a landfill full of it on the west end where the old Sea Arama used to be, if Worff or anyone down there remember that place. =P I noticed the old fishing pier near 61st street and seawall got wiped out, and the one down on the west end had parts of its pier missing.

My old place had several walls knocked out and covered with plastic, it looked in fairly good shape though most of my old furniture, mainly in the bedroom, got moldy and had to be tossed. Luckily, both pcs, monitor and printer made it through fine. We wound up leaving behind maybe 3/4ths of the stuff there, most of which I would've thrown at out some point if I'd gotten around to going through it at some point prior to Ike.

My new place is in kind of South central Austin, with easy access to bus routes. Its a 1 bedroom and alot smaller than my old place, but still nice. The a/c actually works here. =) Plus the maintenance staff have so far been helpful and prompt in fixing things.

If anyone ever happens to travel to Austin, let me know and I'll invite ya over. =)
